Weatherbys Scientific began life in 1985, commencing parentage testing in Thoroughbred horses using blood typing technology. Our formative years were spent at a facility on the same site as the Irish Equine Centre in Johnstown, County Kildare, before we moved to our current lab in Naas. Weatherbys Scientific is a leading provider of advanced genetic testing services for a variety of species, with a strong focus on equine and agricultural sectors. We are committed to innovation, scientific excellence, and delivering high-quality results to our clients worldwide.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Scientist to join our Lab team. The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise in DNA isolation using a variety of methods, whole genome amplification, and other advanced molecular techniques. In addition to hands-on laboratory work, the Senior Scientist will be responsible for leading and mentoring a team of scientists, driving projects ensuring performance and turnaround times are achieved while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency throughout the team. The Senior Scientist will report to the Technical Lead for the area.
The successful applicant will be recruited on a Permanent contract and will be based full time onsite in our Laboratory in Naas, Co. Kildare.
Key Responsibilities:
· Perform DNA isolation from a variety of biological samples, including blood, tissue, hair, and swabs, using manual and automated methods.
· Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to DNA quality and quantity in challenging samples.
· Work with the R+D team to optimize and validate DNA extraction protocols to improve yield, purity, and efficiency across different sample types.
· Analyse and interpret DNA/ WGA data, providing insights and recommendations for further experimental design/ process improvement.
· Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of scientists and laboratory technicians, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.
· Assist the Technical Lead/Laboratory Manager with the management of all members of their operational team including areas such as work schedules, performance, training & development, housekeeping, safety, quality, and documentation to ensure the laboratory is run at maximum efficiency.
· Coordinate the onboarding and training of laboratory scientists and other trainee scientists when required and ensure training records are in line with requirements set out by Quality Department.
· Ensure laboratory compliance with industry regulations, including GLP and ISO17025 standards.
· Lead initiatives to improve laboratory efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the quality of services provided.
· Investigate and troubleshoot any issues that arise and report the findings to Technical Lead/Laboratory Manager.
· Any other duties as required by the business.
Experience:
· At least 3-5 years previous experience operating within a Laboratory environment with a strong focus on DNA isolation, whole genome amplification, and other advanced molecular techniques.
· Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a team of scientists or technicians.
· Proven track record of successfully managing and completing complex research projects.
· Undergraduate or master’s degree in a scientific discipline, preferably molecular biology, data science or genetics related.
· Possess the right to work in Ireland.
Key Skills:
· Strong priority management skills with ability to multitask and work to tight deadlines.
· Expertise in various DNA isolation techniques (manual and automated).
· Knowledge of whole genome amplification methods.
· Strong analytical skills and experience with data interpretation.
· Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
