Following extensive work by Weatherbys Scientific using the Illumina goat genotyping panel, developed by the International Goat Genome Consortium, The Old Irish Goat was shown to be a unique breed.

As a result of this important scientific validation, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) officially recognised the Old Irish Goat Society as a breed society. This recognition enables the society to manage and maintain a structured breeding programme, ensuring the long-term conservation, development, and promotion of the Old Irish Goat breed.

The Old Irish Goat, once thought to be at risk of extinction, is now gaining new prominence not only for its cultural and ecological heritage but also for its potential role in sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation.
